I was a boxer and in the Marine Corps Jim’s yard filled with ancient stoves, refrigerators and sinks, bent bike wheels, used up cans of Barbasol and Old Spice, tin pots, rusty cast iron frying pan, Vietnam War helmet with 1968 and 1969 and the months of the year written on it in black Sharpie, each month carefully crossed out; bullet shells and casings for land mines scattered in the dirt; in the distance, Jim’s house, its front door shut, curtains blocking the windows; the shadow of many large unknown things press against the curtains; in front of the house sits Jim in a motorized wheelchair, a tiny American flag stuck in the back
